The Treatment

What Is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an extensively researched, evidence-based psychotherapy developed for trauma and PTSD. It is endorsed by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to describe traumatic events in extensive detail. Instead, it uses bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, to help the brain process and integrate memories that have become "stuck," reducing their lasting impact on day-to-day functioning.

EMDR can address single-incident trauma (an accident, an assault, a medical event) as well as complex developmental trauma accumulated over time. Many clients describe feeling a lightness and shift in perspective that talk therapy alone had not produced.

WHO Endorsed

EMDR is formally recommended by the World Health Organization for trauma and PTSD treatment.

APA Approved

The American Psychological Association lists EMDR as an empirically supported treatment.

VA Recognized

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs includes EMDR in its clinical practice guidelines for PTSD.

Indications

Who EMDR Helps

PTSD & Single-Incident Trauma

Car accidents, assaults, medical trauma, natural disasters, and other overwhelming events that continue to intrude on present experience.

Complex & Developmental Trauma

Childhood abuse or neglect, chronic relational trauma, and adverse experiences accumulated over time that shape deep patterns of self and relationship.

Anxiety & Phobias

When anxiety or phobic responses are rooted in specific past experiences, EMDR can target those memories directly rather than managing symptoms indefinitely.

Grief & Loss

Particularly useful when grief is complicated, sudden, or involves traumatic elements that make normal mourning difficult.

Shame & Self-Criticism

Many patterns of self-doubt and shame trace back to specific formative experiences. EMDR can help process the memories underlying these patterns.

Traumatic Brain Injury

EMDR can support the psychological integration of TBI experiences, addressing the emotional and cognitive impact alongside other rehabilitation.

About EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy endorsed by the WHO and APA for treating trauma and PTSD. It uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain process and integrate stuck memories.

Who is EMDR therapy for?

EMDR is effective for PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, phobias, grief, and patterns of shame or self-criticism rooted in past experiences. It can address single-incident trauma and complex developmental trauma alike.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?
