Our Approach

Understanding Depression as More Than Mood

Depression often looks like sadness on the surface. Underneath, it can involve disconnection from meaning, a flattened capacity for engagement, internalized self-criticism, unresolved grief, or the accumulated weight of relational patterns that have never been named.

Effective depression treatment starts with understanding which of these threads are present for a specific person. We draw on Somatic Experiencing and polyvagal-informed work to shift the nervous system patterns that sustain low mood, interpersonal therapy to address the relational dimensions, and psychodynamic approaches when depression has deeper roots in unresolved loss or identity.

We also recognize that depression lives in the body. Somatic awareness and gentle regulation work can help reconnect clients with the physical aliveness that depression often mutes.

Somatic Experiencing

Working with the body directly, using polyvagal-informed techniques to shift the nervous system shutdown and low activation that maintain depression over time.

Interpersonal

Addressing the relational context of depression: grief, role transitions, conflict, and isolation that often sustain it.

Psychodynamic

Exploring the deeper patterns and unresolved experiences that contribute to persistent low mood and loss of meaning.

What We Address

Types of Depression We Treat

Major Depressive Disorder

Persistent low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, sleep and appetite changes, and difficulty functioning at work or in relationships. Often responds well to a combination of Somatic Experiencing and supportive therapy.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

Chronic, lower-grade depression (dysthymia) that has been present for years and has become woven into a person's sense of self. Longer-term psychodynamic and relational work is often most effective.

Postpartum Depression

Depression during pregnancy or in the postpartum period, which is more common and more serious than the general "baby blues." Specialized support that accounts for the relational and identity dimensions of new parenthood.

Seasonal Depression

Depression that follows a seasonal pattern and is often accompanied by changes in sleep, appetite, and energy. Addressed within the broader context of regulation and self-care.

Grief-Related Depression

Depression that follows significant loss: bereavement, the end of relationships, loss of role or identity. Not all grief requires treatment, but when it becomes prolonged or disabling, therapy helps.

Depression with Anxiety

Depression and anxiety co-occur frequently. We treat both within an integrated framework rather than addressing them as separate, unrelated concerns.
